Q & A
What inspired you to run for Board Trustee? On that note, what are you hoping to accomplish if elected to the Board of Trustees?
I am running for the Board to be a positive voice of action for not only students and parents, but for our working teachers and staff as well. I have always stood up for working families in Humble ISD, and that’s why I’m so proud to receive an endorsement from the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO. As a Trustee Board member, I will fight to ensure that our district not only listens to our parents, teachers and students, but also that each and every school, regardless of location, has adequate resources to ensure that they can function safely and properly.
How will you advocate for teachers and staff within Humble ISD? In your opinion, what is important to the teachers and staff within Humble ISD?
I think what is most important to teachers and staff is being heard. Just as parents have much to deal with at home, teachers have much to deal with within the classrooms and now virtually. Teachers want a good work/life balance, but it can become difficult with the many responsibilities that are put on them. I promise to be that advocate that listens and support ideas of parents, students and from a teacher’s perspective.
Tell us your thoughts on how Humble ISD has handled virtual learning, and ideas for virtual learning going forward?
Covid-19 is something that no one predicted. Humble ISD, like other districts, has been faced with challenges as we try to figure out the best way to maintain normality and stability in our educational system. I think that the teachers have worked very hard this year and this year has been a year of learning for us all. I have heard ups and downs from teachers, parents, and students. One positive was the ability of our district to re-open face-to-face instruction, yet many teachers have expressed the need for improvements moving forward such as consistency with teacher schedules whether they are face-to-face or virtual. One of my recommendations would be to create a panel that consists of teachers, parents, and maybe even a few students and have a round table discussion to overcome the barriers that we did face this year and be better prepared for next year.
Other than virtual learning, tell us your thoughts about Humble ISD and the handling of COVID-19, both for teachers and students.
Humble ISD did a wonderful job with assisting students and teachers with providing free COVID-19 testing. There are still precautions that the district could take once the amount of positive COVID cases of any particular campus goes beyond a certain percentage. Many people are weary of the reliability of contact tracing. As I stated earlier, I will advocate for more collaboration with our teachers and staff along with parents to ensure that moving forward each and every school is better situated to move forward with in-classroom and virtual instruction safely and adequately.
As you look at Humble ISD, are there areas where funds are overspent? What areas would you look at to reduce expenses?
I am certain that if I am elected as Board Member, that there are areas that spending can be shifted or moved around. I will say that I am grateful to our current and former board members who have served with their time and effort and worked hard to help make this district wonderful. My job as a new board member would be to help ensure those funds are not served in one area or certain schools so that all students and staff have the same opportunities at each campus.
During several Board meetings, students and parents have brought up topics around diversity and inclusion. What can Humble ISD do to ensure it is welcoming to students of all backgrounds?
The way that Humble ISD can ensure the welcoming of students from all backgrounds can start with cultural diversity professional development for all staff and leadership. We focus so much on academic curriculum development, but we rarely look into what ways the curriculum might not reach certain students and why. The focus should not be on what the student needs to do differently, rather how can the teacher differentiate and expose all learning styles based on cultural norms. As an HR Trainer for over 15 years with MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the most diverse institutions in the country, I will bring that awareness and understanding to the school board.
Humble ISD has several Title I campuses. How do we ensure that those campuses have the resources needed?
To ensure that Title I campuses have the resources that they need, we need to conduct surveys and tour these campuses regularly to ensure that each of them have the same resources available to function properly and safely. Again, allowing the teachers and staff to provide input on what is needed is vital to the success of these and all campuses in our district.
Closing thoughts? Anything you would like to add that we didn’t ask? What can people do (or where can they go) to learn more about you?
