Q & A
What inspired you to run for Board Trustee? and, what are you hoping to accomplish if elected to the Board of Trustees?
I am running for office because I understand the needs of this generation. As a product of the public school system, I can empathize with students that were academically unprepared for college.
Once elected, I will be an advocate for the internal efficiency of our education system. I will seek solutions by listening to the students, community, and staff members to ensure their needs are met.
How will you advocate for teachers and staff within Humble ISD? In your opinion, what is important to the teachers and staff within Humble ISD?
As an advocate for the entire Humble ISD community, which includes teachers and staff, I will make myself available to hear their needs and concerns.
I believe in giving teachers the tools and support they need to greatly affect the academic pathway of our students.
Tell us your thoughts on how Humble ISD has handled virtual learning, and ideas for virtual learning going forward?
Virtual learning was an adjustment for everyone. I commend everyone that aided in our students' transition. We do not know what tomorrow holds; however, I would like to be a part of preparing us for our unexpected future.
Other than virtual learning, tell us your thoughts about Humble ISD and the handling of COVID-19, both for teachers and students.
During these unprecedented times, I believe Humble ISD did a phenomenal job navigating the transition to virtual learning. Like many school districts, they had their challenges, but they worked effectively to ensure students and staff members’ safety.
In compliance with CDC guidelines, Humble ISD reduced class sizes and promoted family-chosen modes of instruction.
As you look at Humble ISD, are there areas where funds are overspent? What areas would you look at to reduce expenses?
I am not privy to the inner workings of the district, however from what I have seen Humble ISD manages its financial affairs well. With virtual learning, we have incurred unplanned expenses, and moving forward, we must examine where we’ve been and how funds were spent and evaluate that to plan for future expenses.
During several Board meetings, students and parents have brought up topics around diversity and inclusion. What can Humble ISD do to ensure it is welcoming to students of all backgrounds?
To achieve equity within our community, it is my duty as a trustee member to lead by example. I will be a voice for those who feel unheard by implementing an open-door policy.
Humble ISD has several Title I campuses. How do we ensure that those campuses have the resources needed?
Effective communication is the key to ensuring that our campuses are equipped with proper resources. I will give a listening ear to the community and keep a close eye on the data to assure that our funds are properly allocated.
Closing thoughts? Anything you would like to add that we didn’t ask? What can people do (or where can they go) to learn more about you?
If granted the opportunity to serve on the Board of Trustees, I will be an advocate for students, parents, staff members, and the community. Let’s make a difference together. You can find more information about me at DonteWashington.com.
